Bata, British Telecom, Terna, Unicredit and Whirlpool leverage design thinking and augmented reality to design new B2B services.
Milano, March 4th, 2016 – The second edition of the event Smartglasses, Business and Augmented Reality – Designing new B2B services with Epson Moverio was held in Milan at D Loft, an open B2B space set up with the best technology for digital communication, a format being the fruit of the partnership between Epson, JoinPad and Sketchin, allowing businesses to leverage Augmented Reality and the potential of the new Epson Moverio BT-300 model – just announced in Barcelona – to improve business processes, redesign the internal services or identify new business opportunities.
Bata, British Telecom, Terna, Unicredit and Whirlpool have joined-in in the second round – the first was held in Lugano on 26th of November 2015 – of a series of B2B roadtrip and exclusive workshops, involving the top management of a small number of companies and providing to the participants the entire technology and experience owned by the three partners who initiated the project.
“Augmented Reality – said Mauro Rubin, president of JoinPad – offers users new ways of working in order to leverage on complex data immediately with immediately evident advantages and benefits. But to obtain that not only a solid core technology, safe and reliable as the Epson Moverio glasses is necessary, but also Sketchin’s great design experience (in the development of the interface and the management of the user experience), as well as a powerful and easy to use development tool as our Arrakis SDK. Our partnership works and produces results that satisfy customer’s demands, because we have complementary skills that together form one consistent package and really helpful in order to get to the result.
Technology and design can work together to improve business processes
“The partnership between Epson, JoinPad and Sketchin – explained Luca Mascaro, CEO of Sketchin – was created to make it clear to companies how technology and design can work together to improve business processes, the daily work and bring tangible benefits. We have developed a format capable of exploiting the tools of design thinking and to engage in the first participants in a generative process of co-design of new processes and services. The focus is clear: find out how Augmented Reality can improve the experience of workers and make businesses more efficient.”
How to exploit the potential of Augmented Reality to find solutions that really help companies.
One of the strengths of the format is the synergy of three complementary entities: JoinPad, the Italian specialist in Augmented Reality, offering participants the software and the knowledge about the technology, Sketchin with its experience in design, the work method, usability and user experience, and Epson supplying the smartglasses Moverio, one of the only commercially available devices today capable of allowing a true Augmented Reality experience, that participants can try out to understand its potential.
The companies (Bata, British Telecom, Terna, Unicredit) attended the event with a multidisciplinary team and, at the end of the workshop, each one has presented the prototype for a concrete use case for the Moverios. To achieve this, each group was led by a user experience designer from Sketchin with the support of the staff of JoinPad, to identify the requirement of the use case and trace the experience journey map with the objective to identify the most complex parts of the process analyzed and the main critical issues to work on. After a first phase of brainstorming to identify the possible use cases, next step was the design work with the goal of solving the problem by the end of the same day.
How does augmented reality work?
Augmented Reality allows to superimpose to what you see a series of images or real-time information that enrich the information acquisition. The Epson Moverio smartglasses come with features and functionalities (including binocular vision, front camera, gyroscope, GPS, compass and accelerometer) that are perfectly suited to industrial applications, being able to accurately detect the surrounding environment and the movement of wearer.
