Current and future scenarios of Augmented Reality

From the synergy with VR to 3D mapping and AI-proof enterprises

As Augmented Reality tools and systems evolve, some people think it will become ever more intertwined with VR since they share alike purposes, allowing us to easily switch between the two digital kinds of experiences. But, first, we need some new internet infrastructure virtually replicating the real world, which we can use both to anchor AR objects, e.g. advertisements, and to help robots move autonomously within urban spaces. London-based startup Scape is currently developing accurate to the millimeter 3D maps generated from billions of photos of major cities, among which there are London, Paris, and Tokyo. The solution will enable us to move through augmented environments and to actually begin the next chapter of digital innovation. At the heart of emerging technologies, including AR, there is Artificial Intelligence which is often surrounded by lots of misconceptions. In an article appeared on Forbes, Dr. Ahmed El Adl, warns business leaders against implementing intelligent systems without clearly understanding them because it could do more harm than good to the business’s overall performance.
As far as hardware is concerned, the biggest news of the month is about the Army’s Integrated Visual Augmentation System on HoloLens headset, that will provide assistance in training as well as on the battlefield. Since the project involves at least other 13 companies providing different types of technologies, from sensors to thermal imaging, Army efforts might push forward AR systems for consumers and business as well. A new version of the headset, the HoloLens 2, has been showcased, along with many others, at the latest Hannover Messe, one of the biggest trade fair for industrial innovation held in Germany.

The future of AR - what to expect this year and in 2020

Many AR apps mimic the restricted dynamics of VR, which limits AR interaction opportunities with the real world. Since both technologies have common goals, for instance, providing digital experiences, we might use a hybrid device in the future that merges both of them. For now, it is advised they develop separately until they reach their full potential. Read on Medium

3D mapping will let us paint streets with Augmented Reality

Scape, a London-based startup is working on developing 3D maps of 100 cities around the world, capturing billions of images that the algorithms process in order to give accurate directions. The goal is to create a worldwide infrastructure that will enable robots and driverless cars to move autonomously, as well as to implement AR services. Read on MIT Technology Review

How the Army plans to use Hololens on the battlefield

The Army is building IVAS – Integrated Visual Augmentation System – a special version of Microsoft’s HoloLens, to train soldiers, measure their parameters and improve their abilities. By displaying 3D images, information, location, and thermal imaging directly in the field of view, the army expects to get better at discriminating targets and protecting civilians. Read on CNBC
