Emergency management with Augmented Reality
According to the European Commission, between 1980 and 2016, Eu member states endured over €410 billion in loss due to natural disasters caused by climate change which affected not only the economy but also cultural heritage and ecosystem as floods are usually the biggest hazards in Europe.
In an effort to help European states to prevent and better manage natural risks, three years ago the Commission started and funded a project named I-React aimed at building an innovative multi-platform system that would take advantage of the latest technological developments to help civil protection, first-responders, as well as citizens, cope with climate-related disasters.
The I-React project consists of a platform and an application able to process a large amount of data coming from multiple sources – emergency workers on the ground, citizens, satellite climate services – providing information in real time. Being a multi-platform app, it can run on smartphones, tablets, smart glasses, and other wearables geo-references devices.
JoinPad has collaborated on the project alongside other 20 European companies from the beginning, developing the Augmented Reality version of the application for smart glasses. Our solution allows first responders to send data without using their hands during rescue operations. It also provides the wearer with additional information on their location and surroundings and enables them to send reports directly to their managers in an easy way.
We are honored to have worked for this project, developing innovative tools that can help first responders, decision makers, and businesses to inform prevention and manage emergencies keeping European citizens safe.
After many tests and a general emergency rehearsal in 2018, the project will roll out at the end of this summer and will be privately handled by a newborn company that will spread this technology in the world.
Recently, Euronews covered the end of the project on the European Commission side, which you can read here.

About I-React
I-REACT will be the first European-wide platform to integrate emergency management data coming from multiple sources, including that provided by citizens through social media and crowdsourcing. This way, we will be able to produce information faster and allow citizens, civil protection services and policymakers to effectively prevent and/or react against disasters.
