Digital transformation with AR and VR technologies
November 6th, 2019 – Milan
“Imagine having to take a plane and just before boarding they announce that your flight will be delayed or even canceled. A situation many of you might have faced”.
The audience in the conference room of MiCo – Milano Convention Center nods to the words of Mauro Rubin, CEO at JoinPad, waiting to understand more about how Augmented Reality technology can benefit the industrial field.
“Unless the issue is due to adverse weather conditions, the delay is probably caused by some form of breakdown, more or less complex, which could take hours before it is solved. Have you ever thought about how much the company is losing not only in terms of money but also in terms of brand image and customer relationship? The final costs can reach up to 250 thousand dollars for every single hour of downtime, most of which are not attributable to the costs incurred to repair the damage. In the long run they can impact the economic sustainability of the company itself.”

The example used by our CEO is a typical problem within industrial companies that the new technologies based on Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality intend to solve by enhancing the ability of workers to cope quickly, in a safe, efficient e structured way.
The introduction of new digital tools in factories as well as in everyday life is a topic we discussed extensively on November 6th during the Business Training AR/VR event organized by VRARA Italia, Fiera Milano, and Business International Events on the occasion of AIXA – Artificial Intelligence Expo of Applications held at MiCo – Milano Convention Center.

Business Training AR/VR
For the first time in Italy, national startups and SMEs operating in the field of Augmented and Virtual Reality, part of the international association VRARA – the largest in the world with more than 27.000 professionals and 4.200 companies in 50 countries – had the opportunity to present their work and the group to an audience of entrepreneurs and managers from various sectors. VRARA is focused on the development of a network able to connect tech professionals with both B2B and B2C companies, spread the adoption of AR / VR technologies, and create operational synergies which will transform the country’s economy. The association currently has 20 members working in the Industry, Health, Retail, Marketing and Training sectors. JoinPad has been the first company to bring VRARA to Milan, which is today led by Lorenzo Montagna, president of the group and reference figure in the Italian scene for his dissemination activity on AR / VR technologies.
The business training organized and moderated by Lorenzo took place in two distinct moments. During the morning, the managers of some large companies like Aboca, Apoteca Natura, Intesa San Paolo, Ipsos, Villa Sistemi Medicali, Cama Group and Minolta, they talked about their direct experience on how they successfully integrated AR and VR solutions within their businesses.
In the afternoon, VRARA members went on the stage to present their work, the most relevant use cases, and the possible developments of the technology over the next five years. Besides JoinPad, professionals from Uqido, Dtales, InVRsion, Realmore, 3f-lab, Anothereality, dilium, ETT, Vitruvian VR, Artiness, and Unidentified Sound Object attended the event.
Our CEO, Mauro Rubin, gave a speech titled “How to simplify industrial processes with Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence”, on the role of AI as a transforming force in working contexts, with which operators operators can interact through Augmented Reality interfaces.
Augmented Reality is the best interface to communicate with Artificial Intelligence.
At our booth, it was also possible to try our solutions Smart Assistance e BrainPad designed to provide support using Augmented Reality in areas such as: remote assistance, maintenance, repair, and training.

According to Gartner‘s annual Hype Cycle for emerging technologies, AR and VR have become instruments ready to be fully employed in economic processes. Meanwhile, research and development activities continue in the field of hardware and virtualisation of the real world up to the creation of the AR Cloud that will lead to a greater diffusion of AR / VR in everyday life. The time span that separates us from the so-called “immersive future”, it is going to be short: Facebook, Apple, Amazon, and other major technological players view 2023 as a turning point. Meanwhile, financial analysts forecast an increase in AR / VR technology investments of $ 193 Billion by 2022. This flow of resources will be fundamental to support the development of the technology which is simple to use for the end-user but complex to devise.
As pointed out by Lorenzo Montagna in the letter to the participants at AIXA:
AR and VR, after years of experimentation, have now become essential technologies to create a new relationship with customers, to better manage a series of business processes, and to increase the performance of the entire value chain, positively impacting the whole life cycle of the product. From design to customer support, from market research to production, from marketing to training, from plant maintenance to online sales.

Simplifying the management of complex industrial processes, reducing risks and costs, providing the right information at the right time, and facilitating interaction with the various types of artificial intelligence are some of the main strengths of Augmented Reality solutions, which allow workers to perform better, while increasing the company’s ability to survive in highly competitive markets.
We thank Lorenzo Montagna and the Milan Fiera and Business International teams for organizing the event, which brought together the members of the VR/AR Association for one day to discuss and exchange ideas on the state of digital innovation in Italy.
