Augmented Reality is taking off
From Gartner's Hype Cycle to Legrand-BTicino use case and AR-ready devices
According to the Gartner Hype Cycle, Augmented Reality is considered a mature technology with many applications widespread in industrial processes. For instance, take the use case of JoinPad working with Legrand-Bticino to bring remote support to its on-field technicians using a custom Augmented Reality platform called Smart Support.
Soon AR technologies could be available to anyone, not only to industrial workers. The competition among tech giants as well as startups to produce the right AR device and systems everyone would like to use is getting more fierce. Facebook just announced that it would test the first AR glasses by making nearly one hundred employees wear them in their daily lives. The aim of “Project Aria” is to gather data on some main aspects which are also the greatest challenges when it comes to AR: user experience, external perception and privacy, input systems, and the device in itself, which should not only carry all the hardware in a limited space but also be comfortable and stylish.
Waiting to find out what Facebook’s glasses will look like, there are already other promising models of AR headsets on the market. Nreal has released its mixed reality glasses this year in two versions, one for developers and one for consumers. The latter is available only in South Korea, where it is possible to purchase it in a bundle with Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G. Meanwhile, we recommend watching an interesting video-review of the developer kit, which shows how advanced and game-changing these devices are already.
On the other hand, Apple is equipping its devices with better AR-enabling technology as the 3D laser scanning or LiDAR. The Polycam app for capturing real-world spaces and objects accurately illustrates how Apple devices can be used for AR applications. Today, we cannot wait to find out if, at the “Hi, Speed” event, the buzz around iPhone 12 Pro embedding the same camera systems will turn out to be true. Watch the event on Apple’s website or the official Youtube channel.

Augmented Reality disappeared from Gartner’s Hype Cycle
The 2020 edition of the Gartner Hype Cycle has officially cut out Augmented Reality from upcoming technologies. That is because AR has reached a more mature phase sooner than the expected 5-10 years projection. Countless use cases demonstrating strong ROI, especially during the Covid19 pandemic, are boosting AR technology adoption. Read on AR Post
